Altitude:
1,800m to 2,610m;
Winter season --1 décembre 2002 to -fin avril
Isola Village is 17 km from Isola 2000.
Access: from Nice, exit the A8 at Nice St-Isidore; follow the
RN202 for about 28 km. Turn right onto the D2205 towards
St-Sauveur-sur-Tinée. Take the St- Etienne-de-Tinée road to Isola.
The Resort Isola is one of the many small, high,
purpose-built resorts in the French Alps, but it is
further south than the rest, with access via Nice. On
clear days, they say, you can see the sea. Built by a
British property company at the end of the 1960s, Isola
aimed itself squarely at the family market. Front de Neige
is a complex of block-like apartments, shops, restaurants,
bars and a couple of hotels that makes up the core of the
resort, with nursery slopes and lifts on the doorstep.
Various owners have since worked hard to glamorise the
image of the resort with new hamlets of more luxurious,
wood-clad apartment blocks.
Facilities movie theater, nightclubs, boutiques, torch-lit
descents, fireworks, cross-country skiing, snowboarding circuit, ice
driving, snow scooters, skating rink, karting, snow-shoe walks, dog-sleigh
rides, toboggan, sleighs, ice diving, scenic helicopter rides, gym and
cyber café.
Eating Out Options are limited, most
people eat in.
Apres-Ski The après-ski scene is quite
staid. It picks up in high season and weekends, with
visitors from the Riviera.
Alpine skiing
Isola 2000 - Chair-lifts 10, Cable car 1,
Funicular 1, Drag lift 12, 160 snow cannons, 1 snow park, 24 lifts, 50 runs, 120 km of pistes,
8 green, 19 blue, 17 red, 5 black.
The
Slopes The gondola from the centre of the complex to Pélevos at 2320m
gives access to The St-Sauveur sector too. Levant is linked but on the
opposite side of the resort and reached directly by piste and chair-lift
from the centre.
Snow Reliability
Isola can get different
weather from other major French resorts. Sometimes it has masses of snow
when the rest of the French Alps have none; at other times it misses out.
Extra snowmaking was installed a couple of seasons ago. Regular visitors
say that they never find all the lifts open, but there is always snow –
and plenty of sun. The north-facing slopes of St-Sauveur and Pélevos keep
their snow well.
For Experts
head for St-Sauveur, which has Isola’s longest and most challenging runs, as well
as its best off-piste runs. There are good reds and blacks here – and
from the chair to Mont Mené. Heli-skiing is available too.
For Intermediates
Pélevos area is an
interesting cluster of red and blue runs where intermediates can take
their pick of difficulty. The more adventurous can try the challenging St-Sauveur sector, with its choice of steep reds and blacks. The
south-facing slopes below the Col de la Lombarde, in the Levant sector,
are also intermediate.
For Beginners
There are excellent
nursery slopes right in the heart of the resort, and an easy progression
to greens, then blues, nearby.
Children: ski school, sports club, and baby sitting facilities.
